Lan wont with new router

Set up a new router for my dad and it all works fine (wired and wireless)...except when i plug it into his windows 98 machine via lan cable.

Windows 98 machines lan works fine with the old router.

I had pressumed that a lan should work no matter what the os used...am i wrong?

It's probably not the OS it's probably the settings. If it's set to obtain addresses automatically and the NIC is set to auto negotiate it'll be fine. My money's on there's a setting that's not the same by default in 98.

Though rather than fix this issue i'd generally use it as an excuse to get him to upgrade that 98 machine. They're next to useless in terms of supported browsers and they're a massive security flaw in your network. If I had my way I'd have them banned from being connected to the net

IS the 98 machine trying to see Vista/Win 7 machines at all? If so they need settings changed for it to work properly. As above, I'd be looking to change the 98 nachine if possible...well out of date!
