In 2 frames of mind here as the board has just died leaving me with a lonely i5-750 CPU

Looking about the 1156 boards are getting more and more expensive so was contemplating moving to a cheaper Haswell setup. I built a machine for a friend on a budget a week or so back included a H81 MSI board and G3220 which I think would be a combined £65 to buy new....seems a great little cool running chip but don't know how it is going to stack up against the old 750 despite the newer architecture etc

Has anyone really tested the G3220 in a gaming capacity and do what are thoughts on my thinking?

Plenty of refurb 1156 boards on the bay for under £60. I'd go that route until you can afford a better Haswell setup to be honest. The i5 750 still has life in it.
