Well it came last week, but just not had chance to open it till today

Case.jpg

As it's such a nice day I decided to go down to Halfords to pick up paints and other stuff needed to spray the case

Paints.jpg

I think I have everything I need. 800 and 1500 Wet & Dry (had no 2000 in stock!), Sanding Block, Masking Tape, Mat Black Paint and PlastiKoat Gray Primer. I was going to get Etching Primer and a separate plastic Primer, but halfords didn't have any Etching Primer left so had to get this PlastiKote stuff which can be used on both metals and plastics apparently!? I think I have some tack cloths knocking about somewhere too but will have to dig them out. Anyone think of anything else I need?

First coat of primer on one side panel. Not bad I think as I never done it before :p
Gonna let it dry for a few hours, lightly sand down then prime again. Just taking window off other panel now so I can sand that whilst this is drying. Wish me luck :D

Looking forward to seeing how this goes. Might have been better with satin black instead of mat black. I sprayed my crt mat black a while back and whilst the finish is ok, satin black would have been a lot nicer.

Hmm might do that. I can always take this back and say I picked up wrong one. Does Satin Black need Lacqure (sp)? Don't really want it to have a shine finish if you get me?

Right, progress so far...

Sorry about bad pics, it's with phone camera. My proper cam needs charging.
Anyway, they've all been primed twice and they are under the stairs drying off. Ran out of primer so need to get some more when I'm off, hopefully sometime this week, then prime them again and then paint. I haven't done the front of the case and the top, again because I ran out of primer :D They should be ready to painnt by the weekend.

Cool i cant wait to see the result, should look great in matt black :) .

Me too! Although it's not Mat Black anymore. I took Dale's advice and changed Mat for Black Satin. Managed to get Thursday off this week so gonna finish the priming then start painting it over the weekend.

Antec don't you mean? :p
Good colour match though that! :D

Anyway, nearly done mine. Just got to spray the top and front of the case. All other bits have been sprayed twice, some three times.
I had a bit of trouble spraying the door. Primed it ok no problem and left it a few days before I sprayed it but when I did the paint started to crack in the square grooves at the sides for some reason!? I cleaned it and let it dry proper before I sprayed it so I don't know why that happened? Anyway I left it for a few days, sanded the cracked paint down best I could and sprayed it again and it looks ok now. Can't really see it unless you actually look for it.
Maybe it was the primer? Dunno though because it's plastic and metal primer and I've not had any problems with any other bits.
Anyway all being good I should have it done this weekend so I'll post some more pics soon! :D

Damn i want to do this.

So the case is 35 pound, tempting.

Can ye list all the stuff you used and how much it cost? Would be very nice of you xD

Yeh I like it. My first attempt at spraying..... anything actually :D
I don't think I'd spray a case again though. Well not with cans anyway! It was easy enough on the small parts, but the side panel (window-less one) was pretty hard to get even. I gave it about 6 coats of paint also and I think, if you look closely, it still doesn't look right. Might have a go with some rubbing compound in a few weeks, after the paint has gone fully solid.
Anyway stuff I used.......

800 Grit
1500 Grit
Sanding Block
Masking Tape
Plasti Kote All Purpose Primer x 2
Halfords Satin Black x 3
Tack Cloths

All in all cost me about 45 quid. Probably cost me a similar price to get it done at local car body repair shop, and a better job, but then there's no sense of achievement in that is there? :D

Wow, have to say the Lanboy looks gorgeous in black.I may be tempted to do that to mine now. Also, you know you can remove the little green bit of card on the front of the tools tray.It never looked right to me.

Thanks :D
Yeh I was going to remove it, but got nothing to put in it's place and I think it looks worse with blank card or nothing :)

One of the reasons i can't convince myself to do it. Add a few mods the total price, inc case, would be over £100

Whats the satin finish like?? Is it the colour you where after or should you of ignored my advice and stuck with the matt finish?

Yeh it is a bit much. When you add the case price also it's roughly 80 odd quid... for a lanboy! I wanted to do it though. Never modded a case before so thought I'd give it ago.
Yeh Satin Black is a great finish! Glad I took your advice actually. I'm thinking Mat would have been too dull.

Thanks for the comments guys! :D
I'm looking to try and smooth it out in a few weeks. I said I might try rubbing compound but after asking a few friends this should only be used between coats to even the paint out. Anyone know of anything I could use? T-Cut maybe or just normal car polish?

your not ment to use any kind of cutting compound on fresh paint, normally leave it a few weeks/month before. T-cut would prob do best job though or maybe something be less harsh as not to ruin the paint.

£45 is a bit steep though couldve got yourself a lian li pc7 in black for what it cost over all, but spose you now have a unique case.

Oh I know not to use anything for a few weeks. Maybe give it a go with T-Cut see how that comes out.
Yeh it's a bit steep when you total it all up. I actually do think to myself that I could have bought the Akasa Eclipse for that price, but as you said it's unique.

Nah it looks good, I'm happy with it. Just think that when you look closely at it it doesn't look even. It looks better than it did yesterday though so maybe it just needs a week or so to fully harden?

Yeh a lot of people say £45 for the paint is steep, and a 'better' case could have been had for less than the total price inc the case, but where's the fun in that?? Anyone can go out and but an Eclipse or Lian Li ect, but how many people own a black Lanboy that was modded by themselves??? The whole point of modding is for pleasure and the sense of achievement, look at Messiah Khans project android case, totally unique, but will have coat a fortune, but has been done off his own back and is something to be proud of. I'd own a cheaper modded case done by myself over a more expensive stock case anyday because I know all the work has been done my way and its ended up how I want it and its not the same as every other stock case out there. To a point, you can't put a price on your own unique work.

Yeh that's true. I do keep thinking I could have had the Eclipse for roughly the same price but I am loving the Lanboy in black, and I did that! It was fun doing it and for a first attempt I was quite surprised how well it came out. I read a lot of painting guides before I tried it and TBH it isn't that hard, the hardest part is the prep. Sanding down, masking up, priming then sanding again. I'd do it again, but not with cans! Think I'd have to find something more than a PC case to spray before I bought a compressor though :D
