Nice pictures, looks especially lovely at night. My great uncle (who I was almost named after) died in the back of one so it holds a special place in my heart.

These do nothing for me I'm afraid, the subject itself is great but I don't think the light painting itself is that great. How did you light it?

It seems harsh in places and looks like it could do with being diffused. But it could be my monitor at work which isn't calibrated or of the greatest quality, so I'll reserve judgement till I get home :)

What light painting?

I simply pointed the camera at the Lancaster and used what light there was from the spotlights. Where you can see shadows that break up the prop arcs these come from the trees infront of the spotlights on the hangar roof.

Ah ok, I thought you used a flash or two to paint it.

Try doing that :) - Fun to be had!

Well I think they are fantastic Rob, especially the third one with the full prop blur, and the forth one which has a lot of atmosphere. Personally I don't think they need any further lighting.

I like the first one, the middle two are a bit "meh" for me and I do like the last one except for the pilot's elbow hanging out fo the cokpit - it's distracting for me.

I like the graphic nature of 1 and 4 a lot though.

#2 and #4 for me (agree with the elbow out the window though).

Not fond of the lighting on #1, the green and orange on #3 are distracting for me (#2 pretty much perfect).

Thanks for the feedback.

Just to clarify, this is a very crowded event that doesn't last very long. The Lancaster starts, taxys out a hundred yards or so and then taxys back. It pauses a few times for a minute or two so that you can get some photos without it being a blur, but that's it. You're behind a rope, hemmed in by the crowd, flash isn't going to make much different at this range. If there's an elbow out of the window, tough, the next chance of catching it in the hope that there are no limbs hanging out is next November.

It's a rare and very moving experience to witness a night Lancaster run. You grab what you can in terms of photos, there's little time to fart about.

Simple solution

Careful Photoshopping!

Some lovely pics there. Whats happening with engine 3 in the 3rd shot? Looks like a shower of sparks?!?

The last pic does it for me. Have you also posted these on FC or UKAR as i think i recognise them (may have been someone else at the shoot)

Aviation nightshoots is something i am looking to do next year with any luck, just need to work out timings of them all!

I've posted them on PlaneTalk, KeyPublishing and UKAR. Fighter Control's mainly modern stuff that I have little interest in. The sparks in the third shot are showers of burning carbon from the exhaust. They look great unless you're close enough to get in the way of a few - they hurt.
