Landing a Jet during a storm

Not a time for auto pilot, move aside machine and allow the captain do his/her thing. They certainly earn every penny for their expertise in these conditions.

I think that is what they do… Nose into the headwind and crab as it’s called. To do otherwise would be chaos. Some seriously skilled pilots at LHR yesterday.

I'm amazed how chaotic the control inputs are and despite the pilot looking like they're having a seizure with the controls the plane doesn't seem to do much at all on terms of response. Now that may just be the pilot is amazing and cancelling everything out but it looks weird.

Don’t forget he is using rudder controls also. Auto land ain’t happening here. This is real flying! Auto pilot doesn’t come into it.

You can watch the whole 8 hour BigJetTV stream from during the storm on the YouTube channel if you particularly enjoy watching these landings.

I've watched some. It's not the landings per se I enjoy watching. It's the skill of the pilots. There's an enjoyment in watching something difficult being done very well. This will be the skill of the pilots. Autopilot isn't up to this sort of thing.

You can see a similar thing with in-car video of rally driving if it shows what the driver is doing. The control inputs look chaotic to an observer, but they're absolutely not. If they were actually chaotic, there would be a crash. The control inputs have to be the correct ones at the correct time. It appears chaotic from an outside perspective, but it's very orderly. Pilots are doing it in 3D and usually at an even higher speed and almost all observers will have far more experience with driving than with flying, so it's generally even harder to see the order behind the apparent chaos.

It's only skillful if you know it's hard In The first place. .

I watch it cos aeroplane going sideways is lol.

I took a flight to a rig once and the small chopper was going sideways the whole time...

Pant soiling...
