Hello!

looking to go to potentially one of these places (if covid allows) in the first week of October! Just wondered if anyone has been to either/both of these places before, looking for recommendations!

Well Spain (and the canaries) are currently on the list of places you have to isolate for 14 days when you get back, so I'd be avoiding that for now.

Both are quite a long flight to have to wear a mask for as well - over 4 hours.

Canaries are further south so you're more likely to get better weather, but you'd be unlucky if it was a washout in Cyprus.

I've been to both and there's not really much to choose between them from the hotel/resort viewpoint - they're catering for the same types of customer. If you are going to be out and about sightseeing I'd say Cyprus has more to it. Lanzarote felt like it would be silent without the tourists, Cyprus (Paphos) felt like there was a life beyond holidays and there were locals whose lives didn't revolve around the tourist economy.

your a brave man heading abroad at a time like this.

Make sure you have 14 days holiday spare incase you need to isolate on your return if there is any sudden changes to the COVID situation

You don't need to wear a mask if you're eating, drinking or sleeping on the plane - which is normally 90% of the flight for me. :D

Well eating and drinking is obvious...where did you get the information that you don't need one for sleeping though?

This is Easyjets current policy

In order to help protect yourself and others on your journey, you will need to wear a suitable protective face mask for boarding and throughout your flight with us. This is mandatory on all easyJet flights and you will not be permitted to board if you arrive at the gate without one. You may also be required to wear a mask to enter and travel through the airport terminal at your departure and arrival airport. Masks should typically be replaced every four hours, so please ensure that you, and those you are travelling with, have an adequate supply for the entire duration of your trip.

Our crew and ground teams will also be wearing masks to look after your wellbeing. Only children under the age of six, and those with a valid medical reason supported by a letter from a medical practitioner are exempt. The letter must be available on request for airport staff and crew to see.

I've never been to Cyprus but Lanzarote was nice. I went to Puerto Del Carmen, I'd strongly recommend (I'm sure same would apply to Cyprus) but assuming you go out to eat, avoid the touristy places on the seafront etc, anything that has big signs or pictures of the food is a good rule.

I went with my mate who's father is from there so knows the place, if you go to the more old town restaurants, (basically where the locals go) you'll get a much better meal, and they are still friendly to tourists, or at least the places we went were.

Cyprus handled the Covid19 situation much better than Spain, grand total of 19 deaths... I'd go there...

Granted, things can of course change in the next few weeks but just keep an eye on the numbers... most countries are alert to it now - we'll probably not get the sort of situation we had back in March where Spain and Italy were actively warning us "this is coming to you in 2 weeks, lock down now" and the UK govt was all "but but muh forecasts, muh experts etc.."... mitigation approach... then a sharp u turn too late.

Depends on what you want to do.

The weather should be better in Lanzarote, but it will still be decent in Cyprus in very early October. Lanzarote and Spain in general is dirt cheap. I was there in September and bought two large beers and bacon/cheese fries for €3. Three course Chinese lunch including drink for €7. Like Cyprus it is a dry baron land, but that means no mosquitoes, and the volcanoes give you something to explore.

Puerto Del Carmen, I found to be a Brits abroad tourist hell-hole a bit like Alcudia (not the old town) in Mallorca, but each until their own. At least in some respects Greece and Cyprus is avoid that a bit more. Anyway, Playa Blanca is a little bit less so but quieter. Arecife is more authentic, has the best restaurants, but also run down badly if you are able to see behind the main few streets.

Late September, early October there is a huge festival running for a couple of weeks in Lanzarote with free outdoor concerts and the like. Other than that the island is small and pretty sleepy, not much night life even when you know where to go. It is massively reliant on tourists. That being said if you like hiking, off roading etc.. then you can have fun. Papagayo beech is usually one of the highlights.

Cyprus would probably just pip it for me currently. Larger local population, less draconian measures than Spain, not as cheap but more authentic. Easier to get around and see what you want. Beer is much more expensive though.

Oh, it was something I heard on the radio I think, maybe that's not the case then. Just keep topped up on drinks!
It’s not the case.

There was an announcement on my flight that masks must be worn at all times unless you are eating.

It’s not an issue anyway, people like to try and make it a big issue by moaning but it’s no bother at all.

Personally I wouldn't be going abroad anywhere right now :p but I took my mum to Lanzarote a good few years ago.

We had a self catering apartment in Playa Blanca and it was nice and quiet tourist wise. (And good weather obviously)

We didnt do many outings really - Rancho Park (think that's what it's called), Timanfaya national park, salt plains (not really much to it really lol) we had tried to do the submarine but the owner of the apartment arranged for a tv repair man to come out on the day we planned to go and we missed the last slot  (Though doubt they'd be running the submarine right now anyway)

I think things will get worse here before they get better, I suspect we’ll end up blocklisted. Cyprus has already blocklisted us to a degree (Cat B country).
