I am in the curious position of enjoying the odd driving title on the PC but I currently use a gamepad because the available desk space is taken by the keyboard.

I therefore require a steering wheel designed to be used on the lap, but looking at the popular peripheral maker sites there doesnt appear to be a wheel that is ideal for me :(.

I found one that looks decent on the big river website, its called the "super sport lamboghini" by atomic accessories. Never having heard of this maker, I come here to ask if I should take a gamble and go with the unknown wheel or get a wireless keyboard and a proper desk mounted wheel and move the keyboard when I go to play a racing game.

Thanks guys, I hope Ive been clear enough.

I've never found a steering wheel very satisfactory in most PC driving games, they seem to more or less be the equivalent of a left<>right button press rather than a linear relationship to the wheels, resulting in even the slightest movement spinning the car out :( don't know if theres any games that do handle it properly but most of the popular ones don't.

I have a cheapo saitek and it works great on GTR and Dirt 2.
To the OP, a lap mounted wheel is not a good idea imo as you need a firm base to use one. I wouldnt bother, I would get a bigger desk instead.

***W. A big desk and a decent chair are great things to have. I tried a wheel once, it didnt work out too well :(

I only use my wheel on proper sims such as LFS where its pretty much a necessity. With the more mainstream cross platform racers I prefer a joypad (apart from Trackmania where I use keys :o).

I really can't imagine a lap mounted wheel being any good.

Me neither. I can imagine it being a nightmare especially with force feedback.

Haven't tried many proper sims - mostly arcade driving games, where generally the wheel is naff :(

Wheel works fine, I wrote a little test app and its got a nice range of consistant values.

Its poor programming with games like GRID, etc. thats the problem, my driving skills are nothing special but I can get around the track on keys no hassle.

What wheel is it then? Get a decent wheel and you won't have problems, especially with GRID.

Wheel in question is the Thrustmaster Ferrari GT Experience, but I've tried the MOMO (my brother has one) and another logitech wheel with same results.

I've not had a problem with GRID, works really well with the wheel.

Perhaps Rroff you need to get into the game a bit more, like this guy below :p
