lap top bluescreen on start up

trying to fix friends laptop,without just reinstalling windows,
tried system restore,says no restore points,can get in to safe mode,is there a way to repair windows 7 and keep all programes and folders ect,

Windows 7 offers a repair feature much like previous versions but you might want to make backups first. You can use a live CD with a preinstalled OS on like PEBUILDER to get into your sytem and copy files accross to an external HDD.

Once done, just boot from your OS disk, and select the option to repair rather than install a fresh version.

Moving this to windows

when i try windows 7 repair feature i get a bulescreen,and have to reboot.
