Went over my conroe again - took some photos this time(badly):

Dunno, pc is in bits hence getting the time to do it. When I first lapped it (to 1000 grit iirc) it dropped load temps apx 10c iirc. Have some spare time atm so I thought I would be anal and get a perfect mirror finish - cant see it affecting temps at all tbh as you only really need to go as high as 800 - anything higher is...well....anal lol.

This is an OCers forum so we all do things that are anal in some peoples eyes, how long did you spend getting your rig to hit 4Ghz stable ;) .

Lapping the cpu got me to 4ghz in a way. Lapping it caused temps to drop so more vcore could be applied but yeah, getting anything past 3.8 stable took some doing tbh.

Yup. The edges of the IHS had been gound down by intel already. I just perfected there idea of lapping;) Most IHS's are concave to some degree imo. Some folk have had better results than 10c.

Mine is a version A too - don't let that put you off. Not many B's get 4ghz stable on water tbh although they do seem to overclock better than a's on average. What speed are you at now?

I wasn't scared about lapping too much, it would take some serious rubbing to get past the IHS lol. I was more concerned with knocking of one of the chips off on the back.

Yeah I have submitted my clock over there and got No# 1 for a watercooled E6600 (Ic3man) :D. Its a nice feeling considering XS is up there as one of the foremost overclocking forums - dunno how long it will stay that way.

Pretty nice lap job there but how did you make sure it was flat?

When I did some lapping to a heatsink years ago I had to use plenty of water and a glass sheet to make sure the pressure was even and the end product was flat. But how would you do that on a cpu?

Same method.

Well I got the D-tek in preperation for a quad core - I guess you didn't want to hear that tho lol.

did me e6600 yesterday, dropped a good 6-8c off my load temps even though my IHS wasn't too bad. i didn't bother with a polish :)

worth it i'd say, unless i kill my processor in the next few mths lol

...snip

Polish aint needed m8 and if not cleaned correctly can actually hinder temps - /me hugs IPA can.

Nice close-up photo there m8, what camera is that?

You might find that there will still be some scratches in the copper making a big leap like that which will take a lot longer to get out with 1200 than 800. Its ok but will take a lot more rubbing ;)
