Hiya,

Had a go at lapping the cooler on my graphics card the other day, and i realised how ridiculously easy it was. I'm now very tempted to try lapping the cpu and fitting a non-stock cooler to it.

Its an E2180 so not too expensive to replace on the off chance that i royally **** it up (looks like i'd have to be trying to break it to actually manage it).

So what do you reckon, is it worth it? I'm currently sat at 3.0ghz with the stock cooler, so if i get an arctic cooler or something and lap it as well, might i be able to nudge it up a tad?

you should indeed, having a lapped af7 and processor should reduce temps quite a bit =]

it willhelp temps tbh but its all down to ure mobo and chip to weather or not you will be able to get a better clock out of it.
Lapping is easy and fun , best to do it on a glass surface to get a tottally flat surface

I have a glass chopping board, several sheets of wet and dry going from 400grit to 1500grit and a nice big bottle of brasso and methylated spirits.

I reckon the chip itself is more than happy to go higher, just i stopped pushing it as the temps were about 65degrees under orthos.

Lapping the GPU cooler sounds more fiddly than doing the CPU and Heatsink... just down to the size of the thing!

Go for it ...!

I got my 3 year old to help lapping my Q6600 ;-) - I did cheat a bit and bought the Ultra 120 Extreme pre-lapped from e bay..

Thread bump, i lapped it up and whacked it back in with the new AF7pro and load temps went from 68'ish on load at 3.0ghz 1.45v to 62'ish at 3.3ghz 1.55v

Seems it doesn't want to get through orthos for long runs but it last short ones no problem and is absolutely solid as a rock for gaming and general computer use.

I'm a little bit worried by the voltage, but if the temps okay it shouldn't be much of a problem should it? It is a cheap chip after all. No more leaving the pc on 24/7 though :p
