Anybody tell me what grit wet&dry is used to do this please, and any tips would be wellcome :)

nowadays it makes virtually no difference to temps - it just makes it shiny - seeing as it's going to be face down on the CPU and you'll never see it, it's pretty pointless.

Thats only true if the base is good to start with. Ive heard of massive differences after heatsinks have been lapped.

Generally the starting grit grade depends on how bad the surface is to start with.

Start with an 800 most of the time and wet the paper slightly. Place the paper on flat surface (mirrors are good) and move the block over the paper in circular movements until it slides freely over. Then move up to next grit or repeat with more 800. Keep going upto at least 1500 grit or 2000. Clean base once you are finished with tissue.

Agreed, but have you seen a decent heatsink recently with a non-smooth base?

Surley if your placing it on the IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) on a CPU then the effect is going to be none as the IHS isn't lapped. You'd need to place it on the core to achieve anything.

Big typhoon on an opty.

Without lapping = 38 idle, 48 load.
With Lapping = 32 idle, 45 load.

It is worth doing if the HSF is of poor quality still.

I dropped 5deg lapping my Tuniq Tower 120, but saying that there was virtually no finish on it out of the box.

Also anything over 1000-1200 grit will be purely cosmetic, and as a previous poster said you're never gonna see it once it's mounted

And If your gonna go to the trouble of lapping make sure you use decent thermal paste eg as5

Nor was my freezer 64

Yeah, my Freezer 64 looked a little rough. Never thought about lapping - might give it a go one day if I'm feeling inclined to dismantle my computer lol.

As for you fini - we learn something new every day :D
