Idle down to 21 oC

Load never above 50 oC

Lapped this morning, 5 mins of sanding, mx2 applied and wowsers...

Previous temps were around 30 idle up to 65 degrees load...

This is an OC'd CPU as well in a reasonably hot case (due to GTX 280 and raptors)

I do have good airflow though, side fan 2 front fans 1 exhaust...

Still blown away by the difference it makes...

I find those temps questionable. Are you reading cpu temp or coretemp?

An e8500 on air at 4ghz is not going to be just a degree or two above ambient

180 grade sandpaper

Reading is from DFI smart monitor.

My PC is in the loft room which is quite cold at this time of year so that is helping (no heating in there)

I lapped my QX6700 b4 (similar stepping to the Q6600 mentioned) temp drops then were equally dramatic.

Question: Is that all you did?

e.g. was this with the original Intel heatsink? If so, did you re-do the TIM layer? Did you clean out the case filters and the heatsink?

generally, lapping will have a large effect but there is also a tendency to attribute the entire benefit to the lapping while ignoring anything else which may have been done.

Not knocking the job you did; just questioning if that was all you did.

OK heres what I did...

Removed the heatsink (already had a zalman on it)

Used akasa TIM to remove mx2 from both CPU and HS..

sanded CPU for about 10 mins vertically and horizontally on a flat surface (my desk)

Reapplied TIM to just CPU,

Re applied Heatsink fan in case.... (used MX2 again and spread with a brush to give good contact)

Didnt have to do anything out of the ordinary..

Was a bit nervous when I booted though as it does invalidate the warranty and I didnt fancy buying a new wolfdale!
