Some of you might know I hated my 5820k, it clocked badly had high temps even on custom water (EK Supremacy evo + 360 rad) Temps would hit the mid to high 80c with my 1.325c 4.4ghz overclock and it would need over 1.2v just to get 4ghz stable. This was after a couple of remounts at the time of the build some 2 years ago.
So I had the week off, brought a nice little lapping kit for £8 and did some maintenance on my loop and PC. My heat spreader was badly convex but my waterblock dead flat. It took a few hours but got it nice and flat (but not mirror finish). Took the waterblock apart and it was a little gunky and cleaned it up, the jet plate being so thin was a little bent as well so replaced it with one of the less optimal thicker ones.
The result in short BRILLIANT so far, AIDA64 stress test used to crap out within a couple of mins at 4.5ghz now its been running for 2 hours so so good. Temps instead of the mid to low 80c on the hottest core now is sitting pretty at 60-62c (the coolest core about 10c lower than that). Same voltage 1.325v with 100mhz on my old OC.
At stock it idled in the low 20c and load was in the mid to high 40s!
Its going to be fun finding the limit on my newly lapped CPU.
