Having read up on a load of stuff, I finally went for my first lap attempt last night: Got hold of 240, 400 and 1200 grade silicon carbide (wet n dry) paper, and a mirror.

Went through the grades, got a lot smoother surface but had to bail out before finishing as I was getting a monster headache - temps on idle seem to be down by 4-5 degrees, however under max load the temp still hits 60 - Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 pro, fan on max.

The problem i was having however, is that i found it VERY hard to keep the heatsink stable/level on the abrasive paper - it wouldnt just stroke along it, it kept jumping... so it looks like I might have rounded the corners up, and it didnt seem to be as flat as I would have liked when placing the lapped cooler directly on the glass.

Any hints/tips as to how to keep the heatsink from "slipping" when grinding it? Might try again later on this week, see if I can get it flatter.

A few drops of water and even a drop of washing up liquid will help prevent the CPU/HSF from jumping as will initially lapping it in a circular motion. Use up and down when you're ready to finish off the lap.

Thanks, forgot to mention that I was using the paper wet - but I will try some squeezy, that stuff has 1001 uses im sure!

Might try fixing the mirror in place to the table - reckon that would help?

Cheers!

Yes, make sure the mirror/glass doesn't move and I also tape the wet and dry down to the mirror/glass to also stop it moving.

I just taped 1200 grade paper to my desk then rubbed my CPU up and down in for ages, switching direction every 40 laps or so. Hard to say if i gained anything from it, but i've got the worst Q6600 ever made so i ain't bothered lol.
