various grades of sand paper and a very flat surface, im sure you will get a more informative reply but im not 100% sure myself. i may actaully change my cooler instead
i lapped my ac7 the other day and the results are quite good considering it was the first time i did it. i never even heard of 'lapping' until last week. First, I unclipped all the plastic holders and also the metal holder that holds the heatsink down so the heatsink can then get down to a flat surface. i started with 400grit wet & dry to the bulk of the smoothness as the original heatsink wasnt very well machined and has lots of grooves in it. This was quite hard work and took about an hour. then i went to 800grit, 1200 grit and 1500grit. Though the finish was quite dull and not a 'mirror' finish like some people was getting, the surface was very flat and smooth. whipped on some as5 and i'm now getting temps of 49C under load whereas it was 55C beofre! i'm happy with the results!
Gods gift to lapping. I removed the pushpins and replaced them with the stock Intel HS pins afterwards as they seemed a little more solid and my old AC7 ones had seen better days.
I then unclipped the metal cradle from the sides of the copper block and that keeps them away from the sandpaper surface.
Was just a case of back and forwards on the old wet/dry sandpaper till I could see all the machining marks were gone then I whipped out the Brasso and that bought up the mirror finish.
REALLY IMPORTANT: CLEAN THE SURFACE AFTERWARDS WITH ISOPROPYL - there will be residue left that can potentially react/contaminate your Arctic Silver or whatever else you may be using.
