Hey
I've been hearing good things about this 'lapping' jobby. So I have a few questions before I try it for myself. Probably best to put them in points:
  • Is 'wet and dry' just another name for sandpaper?
  • What is 'IHS'?
  • Should lapping be done on the cooler's heatsink too? (I have a Noctua NH-U12f)
  • What advantage does damping the sandpaper give?
  • Is there any chance of rusting?
  • Why do manufacturers make that nickel top in the first place if the CPU turns out cooler without it?
Any answers would be much appreciated :)

1) Kinda of, its not the stuff you use in the home for woodwork, more car body work

2) IHS = Intregated Heat Spreader

3) Yes ideally do both CPU IHS and Heatsink

4) Wetting it stops it sticking/catching the Item your Lapping and making a
dry powder mess all over the place, also helps the paper stick to the glass.

5) No Cooper/Alu dont rust but do oxidise (discolour over time)

6 ) To stop #5 and look pretty (Bling)

I also have a question about lapping, can I get any old 400, 800 grit etc sandpaper or a special type of sandpaper?

Wet and Dry sandpaper is Black in colour and can be bought from most motorfactors , e.g places that sell car paint , oil , brake pads , etc. and you use it with a little water as mentioned above to stop if from clogging up.
and 400grit is 400grit ,,same as 800 grit is 800grit.

I followed that guide, and managed this:-
