what sort of difference in temps could i expect from lapping? assuming i did an average job of it.

thanks

38-40 idle 69-72 full load.

not sure.

not sure.

could you give a guess? itd be a hassle taking the motherboard etc out to check.

thanks.

what CPU and HS are we talking about to start with?

But at the end of the day lapping is always worth it to get the perfect gap between the two, and that way you get to void not only one but two warranty's as well!

A big guesstimate would be a healthy 4-5 degrees of load temps if you did both and applied a decent layer of AS5 too.

yeah between 4-7 degrees, that roughly what me and my mate acheived when we lapped our Q6600 and heatsinks.

Again depends on cpu and model of heatsink and how flat they are to begin with

hmm well it'd be a q6600 and a tuniq tower.

dont really want to lap the tuniq, i hear it has a good base anyway?

ahhh il just do it and hope for the best!

thanks guys

Ive been wondering this too recently, i've got exavtly the same set up, although my idle temps are between 28-32 and load are 40-42, so not sure it'd make much of an improvement. Still tempted to do it before i start to overclock, but hate the idea of voiding warrenty's.

unless you have a large variance across the cores then I wouldnt worry.. for really uneven CPU surface you can see a significant improvement when lapping.. however to get the best results you will need to lap CPU and Heatsink

Never done a multi-core (yet) but with a single core Prescott I had a drop of 12 degrees.

If you're happy with current temps leave it, but it's usually worth the effort.

if your scared of lapping, practice on an old cpu that has an IHS on it first, this way you can got a feel for it without jumping straight onto your current cpu

hmm, well i really want to get 3.6GHz, that is the main target. i think its achievable with atleast a 5C drop on load so we will see.

im going to practice on my old AMD chip to get a feel for it and see how it effects temps.

thx again for tips;)

ermmmm

ok ive hit a tiny problem lol, where do i buy the sandpaper?

ive tried a few obvious places and i can only find 600 grit.

i dont think they would really count as a competitor, or would they..?

hmm.. anyway i can see some copper after a few rounds of 600 grit!!
