Laptop 15" - Gaming/Work

I'm after a replacement for my Samsung NC10 laptop which is coming up to 4 years old, lags on video play back and can't play any games other than Peggle or Plants Vs Zombies.

I'm looking at this 15R SE laptop as potential replacement, I plan to surf the net, watch DVD's and play some moderately demanding games on it (Minecraft, Starcraft etc)

Will certainly be interested to see your impressions of it, what little info on the web seems to be very positive so far.

@ Gibbo & Co - I think you need to look at your laptop line up. Currently you have your range of laptops with one at the £600 price point and one at the £940 point but absolutely nothing in between. I understand that you can only sell what manufacturers can make but something between £700 - £800 mark might get you some more sales.

I'm personally biding my time to see the reports on the sexy new Dell XPS 15 L521X that's coming out, as I'm after a work/gaming laptop myself. Rumors are it'll be released within the next week or two. Leaked piccies/specs can be seen here: http://ultrabook.it168.com/tu/1360584.shtml

I've been following this thread on it avidly too: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/650572-new-dell-xps-l521x-ivy-bridge-244.html

The biggest downer is that it's a 640M, albeit a 2gb GDDR5 Kepler chip, I'd have preferred something with more oompf, but I'm prepared to make a small graphics sacrifice for a laptop with a high quality build and svelte formfactor. Will be interesting to see how well the GPU overclocks. I'd imagine it'd get up close to the 650M using a cooling plate.

If it's a lemon, I'm looking at the Lenovo Ideapad Y580 which just got released over here for £999 which has a GTX 660M, but is chunky/ugly, and if it ever releases here, the new HP Envy 15.

Well I'm hoping the 7730M will be able to overclock a bit. Would have been nice to have the 650M but hey ho I don't play the most graphics intensive games which this card should let me do to a reasonable standard.

If you look up Vortex II that laptop can be configured with a 7970M which has incredible performance for a mobile GPU. The form factor of the Clevo based system isn't too bad but I decided against it purely because of the uber chunk of a power brick, reportedly **** speakers and webcam. Not a massive deal breaker for most but it just put me off a bit.

I spent a overall a week deciding a laptop that fit all my needs, This showed huge promise so :) just got to jump and hope i suppose.

Should arrive tomorrow :) can not wait to get it out of its box when it gets here.

Will defiantly give a lil review for others considering.

Teaser benchmark result from 3DMark 11 :)

Score
P1638 3DMarks
Graphics Score
1481
Physics Score
3950
Combined Score
1514

quite pleased with that seeing as it's pretty close to the 640M which scored 1718 and the 650M scoring 2078 (results taken from Notebook Check

Will get a proper write up soon.

Edit: here is the link to the result. http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3707523. 3DMark doesn't show recognise my graphics card or cpu which is weird.

Overall i am happy with the build of the laptop, just the battery life currently seems lowish but will keep a overall check on it :)

p.s. this is w33tab1x just don't want to use my old nickname anymore.
