Hi all.

My gf's mum has asked me to help her buy a laptop. Thing is I don't really know anything about laptops, i've only ever had desktops.

It will only be used for basic tasks; surfing the net, looking at photos, word processing etc.

Her budget is £500 tops, I think this should be more than enough for her needs and it may actually better to go for something nearer £400 and buy MS Office with the remaining money.

As for spec...
No need for a big screen, 15" is fine. No need for more than 300GB, anything over 200GB should be fine. No need for any decent graphics, bog standard onboard is fine. As for ram and cpu, just the biggest/fastest possible within the budget. A decent warranty would be a bonus as well but not essential.

The only problem is that she wants to get it on the high street, it CANNOT be bought online. She knows she could save lots of money and get a better machine online but she's not comfortable with it. I think it's a bit silly but it's her choice so I'll run with it.

With that in mind, what would be the best laptop for this budget? I've had a quick look, there's a lot of Acer's at this price range, how are they quality/reliability wise? Also seen a Toshiba L500 for around £400, spec isn't amazing but from my very limited knowledge, I thought these were a better 'brand'?

Thanks for any help.
