Hi all looking for a £500 laptop - price of SSD unsure dependent on laptop price, in the main for surfing + some office work. would like with N range networking @ 17" screen and windows 7. Oh would prefer 4gbs memory even if have to add 2

Am i dreaming ??

Why do you want/need an SSD? For the tasks you mention it seems complete overkill.

Acer Aspire 6930 - £449

* Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 dual core processor.
* 2.0GHz processor speed.
* 2MB cache.
* 4GB DDR2 RAM.
* 250GB SATA hard drive capacity.
* DVD-RW/+RW drive.
* 16in HD widescreen.
* Resolution 1366 x 768 pixels.
* nVidia GeForce 9600M GT graphics card with 1GB graphics memory.
* 1 Ethernet port.
* Wireless/Wi-Fi enabled - b/g/n.
* 3 USB ports.
* 1 HDMI port.
* 5 in 1 media card reader - media card compatibility: Secure Digital (SD), Memory Stick (MS), , xD picture card (xD), Multi Media Card (MMC).
* Integrated 0.3MP webcam.

Sell the 250gb HDD and put it towards an SSD, the problem is even a 128gb ssd is about £160+.

Edit:

Acer Aspire 7535G Laptop
Turion ZM-82
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
17.3" WXGA
ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570
DVDRW
Webcam
Vista Home Premium

£479.99

nice suggestions.

Now have SSD in my main machine have to say would recommend that go SSD always.

Bearing in mind even the cheapest of SSDs cost between 1/4 and 1/2 of your total budget, I think its a completely unrealistic expectation - unless you get a netbook with a 4gb SSD

It's also pointless for your needs. I'd avoid Acer also

I've got an atom based netbook (Samsung N110) with a vertex installed. Would have preferred a slower ssd, but this is the only one I had. I think it's well worth considering, as it makes the machine considerably nicer to use.
