yes oc have the dell range so no specifics what would the best spec processor be for a £800 laptop? too many cores and types of duo's about to chose.

thanks

Whats the main use?

If its gaming, then you won't get much of a gaming rig for £800.

If its general stuff then try to get something with the Core 2 Duo in it.

On another thread someone mentioned a brand called Zepto which might fulfill your requirements.

not needed for any gaming and could go up to £1000

In that case do you really need to spend so much?

For example a well known online retailer has an HP NX6325 for £400 which has a Sempron 3500+, 512Mb RAM, XP Pro, Wifi, DVD Writer, 15 inch screen etc etc

If you get another 512Mb of RAM for it you'd be set and its Vista Ready too so it says.

Agreed. Why spend so much?

The only thing that pushes the cost up for laptops are those wanting one for gaming or an ultra portable.

For general stuff a £400-500 will be more than enough.

You can get an Acer apire 5684WLMI for about £900

Core 2 Duo T5600 (1.86ghz) 2gb DDR2 160gb hard disk, Nvidia 7600 graphics and a built in webcam if your into that also windows MCE

£699 - FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO PA 1510

AMD Turion 64 x2 Dual Core, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD, DVDRW and 15.4" widescreen

not got the best gfx card, but if it not for gamming it will cope with everythign else.

One around £400 will do.
All he said was that he didn't intend on using it to play games.

There are plenty of other activities which could be done far quicker and with far fewer headaches with an £800 rather than a £400 laptop. What if he wants to do some audio/video editing, fancies doing some intensive graphics editing or some general resource-intensive office work? The fact that he's actually concerned about the processing power would suggest this. Just because he doesn't want to game, doesn't mean you should assume the cheapest laptop on the market will suit his needs.
