I've been scouring the internet for a laptop that meets my needs.

My needs being; 13-14" Screen, Core2, 7600/X1600+.

I've so far found 2, but both have their drawbacks.

Zepto have the 6214W, which fits the bill fine, but I've a few concerns about build quality following on from users opinions of them.

Asus also do a W3J, but it retails for about £1200 so thats a no-go.

No other manufacturers seem to offer what I want. HP has one (DV2100) but the GPU is only a 7400, and there's a couple from other makers that only have a Core Duo, not Core2.

Have I missed any out, or are there any forthcoming in the next couple of months? Ideally, I'd like to have it before xmas, but I might be tempted to wait if there's anything specific coming out after then?

I might also consider a 15.4" one, if it was light and thin enough, but they all seem to be that bit bigger, and heavier than a 14". Also, there's still not that many that match my criteria.

Ideas?

Thanks

hiya,

im looking for laptop myself at the moment and i found some nice asus ones too..

do a search for the Asus F3JC Pro... it has nice specs and nice prices too.

Some people say that they overhead but i guess anything with a decent spec does. Additional coolers for it is one solution.

I dont know what else is out there that is any good.

Cheers

Yeah, I've seen the F3 series, the one you posted only has a 7300, I know they also offer the F3JP and F3JV with 7600/X1700 - but they're both too big and heavy - which is why I've been looking at 14" screens. The footprint of 15" screens is just that bit too large, so for a 15" to be suitable it needs to be as small as possible, be very thin and very light.

yeah u are rite on the 7300go.. is it not great?

iv never had laptop so i dont know much about them or the cards used in them.

The one i was looking at was a mesh asus one.. was decent spec for the price.

What are your needs and criteria from a laptop then?

A desktop replacement thats small and light enough to easily carry around places. When comparing side by side a 15.4" one and a 14.1" one, the latter feels much more portable, and easier to move about etc.

I want the Core2 for various reasons, and whilst I know the limitations of the 7600/X1600's they're still good enough to play recent games, as they score a little bit better than my current PC (which it'll be replacing).

Rock's Pegasus 665 looks good, read a few reviews and people seem happy with them. core2 and 7600 for just over 800 pounds, but 15.4" screen though, so not ultra portable.

Try the A8J, it's virtually the same but without the metal casing etc.

Only the A8Jm has a decent enough graphics card, but doesn't appear to be available in the UK, nor offers a Core2 option, only Core Duo?

I've done some digging and the ASUS A8Js seems to offer what I want, but isn't available in the UK yet, it looks like it's only just available in the US too.

Price might be an issue its just under 1500USD, so might be able to get it for £900 if and when it's released. Not much information on any UK release date yet though.

I gave up looking for a cheap core 2 duo/x1600 setup and ended up going for an inspiron 6400 with a core 2 duo and x1400 which cost a little over 500 bux, sure an x1600 would eclipse the x1400 but I couldnt justify spending another 500 just for a quicker gpu.

I got a HP DV8333EA for 999, 1 gig ram, only core duo but with a 7600 Go and widescreen 1440x900 ..
came with digital tv tuner card, works great
XP home
2x80Gig 7200 drives.

A Zepto spec equiv came in a lot higher price for me, this lappy is awesome

3Ddmark06 bench at 2300!!

Cheers, I'm still waiting for info on UK availability of the Asus A8Js but that looks like a good alternative maybe. I'll look into it some more, shame it's not 14" though :\
