Hi all had this laptop nearly 4 years, but its still under guarentee luckily i think, it seems to have some problems, and i was wondering if anyone could suggest ways to fix it.... or say if it would be better to send it back?

Its a Toshiba Satellite 5200-801, with a 2Ghz P4 and 512MB DDR Ram, also has a Geforce 4 Go 460 64MB.

The problems:

1) When watching movies, or playing games (Which it could do fine before) the cpu usage spikes to 100% and the video and audia becomes choppy, laggy etc. I tried blowing it clean with canned air, it helped a little but still used 100% after a while.

2) The hinges on the laptop gave a funny noise a while ago, and slamed down on my hands, they will stay up at a very funny angle but any thing past and they fall down, or backwards. The screen now does not line up with the base either, unless i push it into place, and sometimes the screen makes a banging noise when i lift it up to use.

3) Ocasionaly, the DVD drive will refuse to find a DVD, it will scan for about 5 mins then tell me there is no DVD in the drive.

4) The screen, has 3 Gray dots on it, one tiny, one a little bigger, and one a little longer, i cant clean them off?

5) If looking at grey, or white on the screen, it apears sort of crystaly, and weird to look at.

6) Ocasionaly a USB port will stop working, E.G if i have a USB modem pluged in, it will go Boop to say the device was disconected, and the Beep to say it was reconected, and i will have to reconect to the net, the other USB ports dont have that problem.

7) THe back speaker, on the left, of which the screen hinge goes into has come away a little, now this seems cosmetic so i am not bothered, however once the speaker started to work intermitantly, but i seem to have fixed this by pushing it about a little.

8) Ocasionaly, my hard drive will squeek at me with a seek noise, each time i minimize and maximise a window, formating did not cure this, however rebooting will stop it

Thanks for any advice,

Jcb33, Mr Gunn :)

Hmmm, just backed up all my files, put in recovering disk and it started spamming:

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ERROR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Extraction failed...

So i hit enter and it said

E:/

So i rebooted as no comands would work, and it says:

Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key

Trying to install windows again, its taken about 20 mins to "Setup is loading files"

It shows both partitions, 1 and 2 as having the full amount free 28601MB

Shall i reinstall windows or just send it back?

Reformat, it.The grey dots on your screen are dead pixels, nothing can be done about them, its a problem with lcd monitors. Its 4 years old, it doesnt suprise me its starting to fail now. I doubt its under warranty still, or if they would do anything about it.

Got a 5 year warentee for £639 so i know its still under and if they dont im taking them to court :D

If you've got a five year warranty my friend then back up your data and send the damn thing back. If you've paid to ensure your system is still working as it should then they have to honour it.

Look at it like this, if you have a car with athree year warranty and in two and a half years it has problems, then you want it fixed don't you? Send it back and make um fix every problem you have for I'm sure under the terms of your warranty, if they can't fix it then they must replace it.

Unless its a Dell, then just chuck it in the bin.......:D lol. Just joking.

Well I cant see them repairing it, they end up spending as much fixing it as a new laptop anyway probably. The replacement laptop has to be worth at least as much as your laptop was when you originally bought it. So the warranty you bought for £640 may actually get you a new laptop more expensive than itself. :D

How much did you orginally buy the laptop for?

:( Back when i was a laptop nub i paid £2499.99 Just so i could play games.... oh how the prices have gone down since then i could get a laptop to play modern games for £900  now

I couldnt find much on the warranty.

"This warranty shall not apply to any failure or defect attributable to any extrinsic cause, accidental damage, improper use, any modification, adaptation or neglect or wear and tear. This applies to both hardware casing and the notebook’s screen."

The dvd drive and usb port still dont work though thats not wear and tear, if you send it to where you bought it from they may give you a replacement.
