I'm looking for a reasonably hi spec laptop for business use. Have a budget of £1500 but can go higher if needed.
It's mainly for software development but I will be using a lot of different applications simultaneously.
I'm not too worried about battery performance as it's likely to be used on the mains rather than mobile it will just be at different sites.

I've seen some decent laptops from Dell and Rock but having never purchased a laptop I'm looking for other peoples opinions.

A few things I'm confused about. Are laptops using 64 bit processors? It just seems that all the laptops come with 32bit Vista versions. Why is this? Doesn't this limit it memory wise?

The other thing I've seen is on wireless connections, draft N version. Is this worth it?

Thanks,
Anthony

I've been looking for a laptop for similar usage and have narrowed it down between the HP 8510w and Lenovo T61p. At this time I'm leaning toward the HP simply because I've used them before and never been disappointed.

The two I've mentioned are 64 bit.

It does limit you if you want 4GB of RAM. I'm led to believe that HP ship with both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista pre installed and you get to choose during the initial install on your choice of OS. This is a one time only choice.

In the price range you're looking you'll find that most come with a draft N wireless card. I certainly won't pay extra for it as I don't have a draft N router to make use of it.

Thanks for that.
Had a look at both of those you recommended but realised that they were only 15.4 inch screens.

Did you come across any with 17inch?

The HP 8710w but no one has it in stock in the UK - I've been waiting 3 months for it and have given up moving onto the 8510w. If you find stock let me know.

I see what you mean.

Have you looked at the Dell Vostro? Just specced out a 17 inch version that was reasonable for 1100 plus vat.

I'm thinking of going that route and just accept a 32bit OS for now.

I have looked at the Vostro but I've had bad experiences with Dell build quality in the past and I just can't get past that.

Can you give some examples?
I only know one person who has one and they think its great.

The one I was looking at had 3 years support. Does that not cover issues if things fail?
