Hi all.

A friend's asked for some advice on a laptop but I have no clue about laptops, i'm a desktop man (boo hiss!)!

She has a £400-500 budget and that must include windows (not sure between vista or 7).

What would recommend? I have no idea what a good make are, perhaps Acer? Also not a fan of the four letter online retailer. Friend's had a couple of shoddy laptops from them.

Thanks for any help.

Hi, mpledge52

First of all what will be the use of this laptop?, has she got a preference for screen size?
Other things for this budget look for a Intel Core 2 Duo equipped laptop. 250gb hard drive minimum. The question between win7 and vista based on my experience of the win7 beta, win 7 looks like a polished version of vista, so if a laptop offers the win7 upgrade offer with a good spec then you could recommend it.

Sorry I should have put that in the initial post.

It will be used for general work, office web browsing etc. No gaming or need for monster storage. Found Office for £55 odd, so that means the laptop need to be around the £450 mark. I've come up with these 3:

Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 - £445

Lenovo N500 - £411

Acer Aspire 5735 -£439

For me the Acer is out in front by a fair bit...but I don't know much! It's the only one that's not upgradable to windows 7 though. She's not that computer savvy though so I don't think she'll really see the benefit!
