Hi guys,

My mates mum is thinking of getting a laptop, mainly for internet use.
There is a pc upstaires with a normal usb adsl modem.

Can she still use the internet connection, without buying a wireless router?

cheers

If you want the internet on both at the same time then connect the laptop to the pc via ethernet and share the pc's internet connection. The Windows Network Wizzard will set up the Internet Connection Sharing for you.

agreed

the pc upstairs would always have to be switched on for the laptop to connect to the internet.
I would personally get rid of the usb modem and get a cheap router.

On one or the other but not both. A router would be needed if both are to access the internet simultaneously.

Hope this helps, null :)
Not so - stick a cheap Wi-Fi USB key in the PC upstairs, set it up in Adhoc mode and enable Internet connection sharing. The only 'problem' is that the upstairs PC has to be on.

The best solution is to get an ADSL router though as then the PCs are be completely independent.
