Laptop backlight issue

I recently made another post in a different section about my Samsung R700 laptop screen's backlight flickering on and off.
I have sent it off for repair (not to Samsung, out of warranty) and they have told me I am going to need a new screen....£200...
Some people have told me it could just be a case of a loose connection or it needing a single part replacing, but this place has told me the whole screen has to be replaced. From what they've told me it sounds like they just simply turned it on and went "yeh...broken" without even checking the inside of the laptop.
Does it seem reasonable that I would need an entire new screen just to fix a problem with the backlight?

EDIT: I have been reading on the internet and most places suggest either a loose cable, eroded connections, or needing a new screen inverter.
And in case anybody asks...it is only the backlight that goes off. You can still see the image on the screen. This also leads me to believe I do not need an entire new screen.

I would say either inverter or the actual backlight CFLs themselves at the most. Certainly it doesn't need the entire panel replacing - they may only be able to get the complete assembly though.

sounds more like a break in the ribbon cable that runs from the main board throught the case hinge to the panel to me.

some tubes are a sod to replace ( £25 for a tube ) so some repairers have no option but to replace the panel, btw if you take the case off and look on the sticker it will give a code like lx1505-001 write it down and google it original panels are expensive aftermarket ones cost £75-£150 dependant on size etc.

test the voltage on the inverter, it should output 400V or more...

EDIT: Sounds more like a bad ribbon cable to me, around £30-£40 for the cable, but it can be a PITA to swap them...
