Battery memory effect is a thing of the past tbh, no need to cycle them. Must admit the dell batteries are pants though! they tend to fail after 12 months, I’ve had a couple of 9cell 85Wh packs do this, for a good few months they sustain very very good capacity then suddenly die! apparently its an issue with the charging circuit within the batteries.

Oh dear, so what sort of life can I expect from my new Vostro with its 6 cell battery? Also, can one buy better batteries from other manufacturers - I've noticed batteries fior Dells being sold in various places.

The Dell Vostro should get just over 3 hours, on Balanced, with Brightness low.
You can get 3rd party batteries for laptops, but I've known them to fail a lot faster than 1st party ones.
