Hello all you laptop users!

What is your usage profile with battery and/or AC? How often do you run it on battery vs AC? Do you unplug from the mains when shut down? Does leaving it plugged in damage the battery?

I have been using laptops for ages, but have never wondered the "best" way to treat the battery etc for longevity. Normally I'd shut it down and unplug it from mains, although lately I have noticed the laptop battery draining by as much as 10% in 24 hours (when left in the laptop). There is a 0-2% drain when the laptop battery is removed in the same time period (all measured using Windows battery meter).

Some say leaving it plugged into AC doesn't really damage anything, although it's good to use it on the battery from time to time. Others say to disconnect from AC as much as possible.

I know with lithium-ion batteries, heat and munching charge cycles is what wears batteries down, but I've seen laptops that have lived their whole life on AC and the battery is all but kaput.

The laptop is circa 2 years old.

Agreed.

Part of me just thinks to leave the laptop plugged in at all times, as although being kept at 100% capacity doesn't do any favours, it doesn't seem to cause as much long term damage as ploughing through charge cycles every time.
