My laptop is an Acer 6930G. When I switched it on this morning it started making a "deeee de deeee de" noise. It got to the screen that displays Acer's logo before I switched it off. My initial assumption is that it was warning me that a fan isn't working properly but I'm no expert so I might be talking crap:confused:

I gave Acer a phone this morning but they want £54 to look at it as it is 14 months old and as such is outwith the warranty. I've nerver pocked around inside a laptop before but I have performed upgrades to a desktop before so I would rather not spend a load of cash getting it fixed if it's something simple.

Does anyone have any advice on how to start diagnosing the problem?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Edit: According to Wikipedia its a "system board problem". I've taken the back off and tried reseating the ram. The fan starts up OK then stops when the Acer logo comes on screen so I'm prety sure that isn't the problem.

In my uninformed opinion it's knackered:mad:

If anyone can prove me wrong I would be very grateful.

12 months warranty is the legal minimum, a laptop or other electrical 'good' of that value can reasonably be expected
to last a lot longer than 12 months so there's still residual warranty under the sale of goods act. Like most purchasers
you're uninformed in the dark arts of diagnosis and repair - nowt wrong with that - but you do have rights as a consumer
and the place where you bought the laptop from has obligations to you as a purchaser after the initial 12 months.

Thanks for the response mate. I had wondered about the Sale of Goods Act.

I was planning to take a look through moneysavingexpert.com but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions for places to get info on exactly what my rights are?
