Hey guys,

Wanna reformat a friends laptop, unfortunately the bios is password protected..

Ive never opened a laptop so cannot reset CMOS....

How do i work around this to unlock the bios?

Please help

thanks in advance..

cheers

ask the friend for the password?

a lot of laptops have work arounds, but the passwords are generally in place to stop any access.

You could also approach the maker of the laptop, but they will probably request serial number and proof of ownership.

What laptop btw lol, not a hp dv5000 series is it?? :D

mine was knicked from the boot of my car.

For £600 i will supply the password if it is lol.

Google the make and model for a manual or support forum for that model and there will be some way of resetting it with a jumper or shorting an internal battery etc

A lot of modern laptops will not have a bypass jumper as this was too easy for when laptops were stolen.

Now, with most you have to contact an authorised repair centre who will charge you to "repair" the laptop and remove the bios password, a lot will also ask for proof of ownership.

We had this recently with a clients Toshiba laptop.

thats precisely how I did it...

Well I noticed I get a "boot menu" option which is outside of the bios - F12...at post screen...

so I booted from cd rom and voila...

only trouble is if i ever need to get into bios im screwed...

thanks

there is actually a dongle you can buy that you connect to the laptop and it will bypass the BIOS passwords of 99% of common make laptops out there, try searching the auction site for it. I used one borrowed from a friend on a HP laptop, worked instantly :)

why on earth did you leave it in the boot of your car?

I put my laptop in the boot of my car at work, drove 60 miles to my home town and nipped into a shop to buy something on the way home, while in the shop my boot window got smashed and they stole it.

Why not leave the laptop in the boot. not as if i got out and put it in the boot outside the shop

Are you not supposed to be able to leave stuff in the boot of your car out of site these days?
