Basically I have been given a Toshiba laptop (L40-156) for free and I have been having issues with it booting up.

I get to the Toshiba start up screen with no issues, no beeps from the motherboard or anything, I can also get into the BIOS. When the Computer is trying to get into Windows it hangs and then I get the good old BSOD . I have tried doing a reinstall of Windows using the recovery CD, it loads up the files for the installation and then crashes. I can only think of it being a duff Hard drive. Any ideas on how to fix this? Or is it new Hard drive time? :(

If I do get a new HDD is it possible to install off the recovery disk or am I going to have to get a copy of Windows as well?

Cheers
Ryan

Try mem testing the ram as well, this might be coursing the BSOD also does the cpu fan operate?

Well after restarting a couple of times getting memtest to run, it booted into a system restore option, rolled it back and ouila! It's fixed! Gonna run Chkdisk now to make sure it's not gonna stop again :)
