Laptop Brands, avoid or recommend?

Dell - Recommend
Acer (Cheaper models) - Avoid

I've owned a Dell Vostro 1700 and Alienware M11x, both of which have been outstanding build quality (The Vostro was built like a tank)

I have recently bought an HP Envy 17 to replace my Sony Vaio (which was excellent). So far it seems a well made, decent quality piece of kit. Far more so than the Dell that I bought initially and returned.

Asus, MSI, Sony, HP Business (Probook/Elitebook), Lenovo all good

Advent, Packard Bell very poor

Acer worth a punt as the newer ones are much better and warranty is dirt cheap.

Toshiba good, dell mostly good but dell business support is better than home,

Want rock solid reliability buy Lenovo ThinkPads with prices from £300-£1200 direct from Lenovo uk.

Want best value gaming buy a Dell XPS L702s (typically 4gb mem, i5, GT550 = £600 with voucher codes)

Have an HP Business Notebook (nc8430) which has been incredible and after 5 years is only now starting to develop faults.

My other is a Sony Vaio F Series which isnt as sturdy as the HP (its consumer grade), but has been decent so far.

Id recommend either.

I would recommend HP business range or Envy both are really well made and so far reliable.
Also hve a Samsung Q45 which is still powering along after 3 yrs.
Kids had Dell's both keybords fell apart and had nothing but problems with.....the top range
XPS and vostro's seem to get good ratings ....but I personally would avoid Dell after our exp of them !!
Lenovo a few freinds have and rate highly .....

Acer is always top of my list, along with Dell.

I would avoid pretty much anything else but main ones are Advent, Packard Bell (older ones, not acer ones) Gateway (again just the older ones), Sony, Asus, MSI, anything made by clevo and usually rebranded to something else.

I've had no problems with an 8 year old Samsung X10 other than the hinges are loose so the lcd needs to be opened fully, it won't hold at an angle. The battery still lasts for a couple of hours!
My 3+ year old Dell XPS M1710 has also been hassle free.

As others have stated, I'd avoid Packard Bell, Advent.

Buy : Dell, great solid products, extremely good value if you buy from the outlet or the right offer.

Avoid: Apple, looks nice, holds value well, but suspect design issues due to their quest for thinness and using wacky materials.
