Laptop broken?

I have a friends 1yr old Amilo PA 1510 laptop the hard drive spins up and is fine and i have extracted the data off of it by plugging it into my desktop so the HD is fine. After a few mins of use the screen goes strippy with colours and so cannot see or do anything and cannot any repsonse back from the laptop - I belive the graphics card/controller is corrupted can anyone agree with this and is it fixable?

95% (so nearly everytime) when turning the laptop on the screen seems not to turn itself so cannot do anything plugged into another monitor and the monitor cannot see a video signal being produced at all... So i take the the laptop is no more in terms of the graphics card/controller.

if you're getting nothing on external then it would suggest the mainboard, only viable option is replacement of the mainboard which would probably cost more than its currently worth. Stick it on the bay as you will get a reasonable amount for it and get a new one would be the cheapest option.
