Dad gave me his old laptop and initially it wouldn't work at all and kept BSOD'ing.

So we swapped the hard drive, and put it through the Memory Test and Hard Disk test that are on the Ubuntu install disk and everything ran fine.

So we tried to install XP again, and it worked, installed SP2, it worked, go to restart the computer after the update, and when it turns on, most of he time the Sony Vaio splash screen doesn't appear. Sometimes it does, and freezes, sometimes it makes it past that to the windows logo and freezes, sometimes it makes it to the desktop, and then BSODS.

The BSOD doesn't give a code at the top like XXX_XXXX_XXX but does give the error code:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804AB028, 0xF7780858, 0x00000000)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It's not that much of a big deal it's quite old.

But would like to get it working however, thanks.

Do you know what video card the system uses, also do you know what the system temps are and does the cpu fan spin up.

Copied from a website:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Processor
512MB DDR SDRAM
60GB Hard Drive
CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
15" XGA Screen
ATI RADEON IGP345M Graphics
On Board 802.11b/g Wireless LAN and 10/100 LAN - Call for advice on Wireless networking
56k V.92 Fax / Modem

However it does have 1GB of RAM upgraded.

I will download HWMonitor and find out for you.

Boot into safe mode and use a program called BlueScreen view.

Handy little tool to have ^_-.

Won't really help, plus sometimes I can't even get into safe mode.

However it is happily atm downloading windows update, hopefully I'll make it to SP3!

SCRATCH THAT:

Just for a bsod with nave15.sys =/
