Core Duo's are 32bit processors based on the Pentium 'M',

Core 2 Duo's are 64 bit processors, and while they are still derived from Pentium 'M', they are 'the next generation'.

Core 2 Duo's have higher clock speeds, more cache, use less power.. Really a completely different beast.

34w and 31 w power usage too.

Whats the perfromance gap between the two in realterms?

say between:

T2300 65 nm 2 MB L2 1.66 GHz 667 MHz 31W (Core Duo)

T5500 65-nm 2MB L2 1.66 GHz 667 MHz 34W (Core 2 Duo)

Apart from the 64bit ?

Basics
c2d merom supports 64bit, faster bus speeds, is the basis for santa rosa cpu's (uses different socket again iirc) faster clock for clock against yonah. Improved design of the pentium m dual core (yonah)

cd yonah - 32bit, arguably slightly better battery life, slower bus speeds. Basically 2 pentium m cores stuck together :)
