Hi,

What does everyone feel is the best brand for laptops Toshiba, Sony or HP? Its a shame all new laptops seem to come with Vista now. I want XP! :)

I would go HP, we use their laptops at work and they're great.

We did use Toshiba but had ridiculous amounts of problems with them, the HP's are a bit more costly but it's worth it for a hassle free life.

Sony, I don't have any direct experience with, but colleagues have told me that they are pretty much the nicest looking laptops available. However they are absolute garbage, you're just paying for the name.

I am looking at a HP now and they are good for the price. I am actually looking at one of the media ones. I used to hate vista with a passion but now I use it as my main OS and I really like it. Plus I read that microsoft is going to start allowing people to downgrade from vista to xp if they want.

But yeh HP are a good brand. Also the dell vostro laptops seem to be very good a lot of people on these forums who bought them. Plus you can buy them off overclockers.

Yeah like all the above, but I really wanted XP as some audio proggies have probs with Vista and also I would prefer a "light" system for my laptop... Anyone know any decent spec laptops with XP?! :) All seem to be vista by default!

Generally a software license covers you for previous versions of the software too.

I've checked on microsofts website and if you have an OEM copy (which you would if you bought a laptop with Vista) you can 'downgrade' to Windows XP.

However, this is only available on Vista Business, and Vista Ultimate. So if you really want to use XP make sure you get one with Ultimate or Business.

Another word of warning if you are still serious about 'downgrading' - Make sure drivers are available!

Could look at Dell. I believe on some of their configs you can choose between either XP and Vista.

Toshiba. I bought someone a low-end one and its pretty well-specced for the price. For example, an Atheros-based wireless adapter and ATI Directx 9 graphics.

I've just brought a HP 8510p, for me it's about as good a laptop as I could have expected. They also bundled a copy of XP in with the computer which I wasn't expecting (main OS was vista business). Although I don't know why you'd want to stick with XP when vista works soooo well!! Have you just been watching too many of those apple ads?

With the HP laptop anyway I'm using vista business 64bit. All my drivers/hardware/games and programs etc work perfectly.

Another HP User

had a few over the last few years coming from a Toshiba which was absolutely pants.

for me the best one i had was a big old bulky Compaq no idea what happened to them.

HP's seem to have all the bells and whistles on them.

I use XP as vista has issues with my xbox360 and programs like transcode360 or certainly did last time i tried the 2 together. i got xp and then vista came through the post for free eventually.

The following is all based on limited personal experience...

Toshiba's are awful, my ex-bosses daughters has been back for repair twice in three months so far.

Her previous HP fell to bits, literally.

My First Sony Vaio is still going strong, although I did have to replace the memory in it a while back. My newer one is good, but the build quality is nothing like the old one and I cannot see it lasting anywhere near as well.

I thought IBM / Lenevo were regarded as the best quality laptops?

They used to be. However recently they seem to be having a fair few quality issues (specifically the screen on their flagship t61p being of below average quality), they also seem to be having supply issues at the moment too, I was messed around for over a month before I cancelled my order and went with HP.
