Laptop choices/decisions

I have never owned a laptop, but due to my computer taking up far too much of my small living room I want to switch to a laptop to save space.

I've ruled out the Macbooks because they are too expensive (although they look quite nice!), and have narrowed it down to two options.

They are:
  • A competitors own brand laptop
  • A Dell Vostro 1500

The specs and prices are similar, with the dell being a few quid more expensive, has firewire, and a webcam. But.. the Dells all come with operating systems, and I can get the other laptop without an OS, which makes it cheaper than the Dell, meaning I can then shove my existing copy of XP Home on it.

Is it worth going for a Dell because they are a bigger company? Do things like brand really matter that much with laptops, for instance when it's a few years old and I want to sell it, will a dell be worth more than a rebadged generic laptop?

Any advice welcomed!!

We all know the spec of the Vostro's but what about the other laptop?

Memory
2048MB DDR2 667MHz Memory
Hard Drive

So basically the same apart from the graphics card.
