laptop connected to modem but no internet

Okay over the last 2 days ive been sorting out my friends laptop for the usual virus etc. so i updated xp to sp3 and everything was fine working ok with my router.
He left mine next day at work using an ethrenet cable it didnt work about 3 it technicans looked and couldnt find out the problem, now it doesnt work on my wireless
As in title really
when i go on cmd no ip is available and packets are being sent but not recieved.
Is seems when googleing it it is a common problem but there are no answers in over 10 pages.

What happens if you patch the laptop into your router?

Ok fixed the problem for anybody having the same problem.
I uninstalled the program to conect to the internet used an ethranet then disabled firewall and used windows wireless wich detects and connects with no probblem
