Hi

I just replaced my router since the last one died. I bought the wrong one originally but rather than take it back I just got a DSL modem and connected them up. So I now have a modem and Wlan router, all my wireless devices work apart from 1 of my laptops no matter what I try it just won't connect. After a bit of looking around I found it was todo with the DHCP not working and neither does me giving it a static ip. Been pulling my hair out trying to figure what I have done wrong.

I connected the modem to the LAN or WAN port on the wlan router and ran it that way everything was fine but the laptop didn't connect. Set the router to run as access point and still nothing.

Try decreasing the wireless router's wireless standard, as it may be the case of the router running at a higher standard than the laptop's wireless adapter can handle. So, if the router's running Wireless N, try decreasing it to G.

Its currently set to auto does that mean it can accept more than one type or do they need to be the same ?.

If it's set to auto, it should configure it automatically. But try and manually change it, and see if you're able to establish a connection.

Sorry should have been a bit more clear. It does connect to the router but does't establish an internet connection.

From what i found out the 196 address is because it didnt get assigned an ip, but even when i use a static one it says that the DNS servers are not responding

A 196.0.0.0 address is a public address IIRC. When you use a static IP, what IP are you giving your adapter?

What is the IP of your router? You should be able to ping it if you are connected to the network.

I have tried a few. The wlan routers ip is 192.168.1.3 the DSL router is 192.168.1.1 I gave the laptop a ip of 192.168.1.5 that didnt work so i tried more getting higher each time none worked. My other laptops and kindle are all working without setting up any static ip.

Hmm. Try this:
Static IP: 192.168.1.89 (A higher number to avoid possible IP conflicts with other devices)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (I'm presuming it will be this)
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (IP of the DSL router)
Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS Server)

If that doesn't work, try updating your network adapter's drivers.

Hmm. I'm guessing that when you connect your laptop and wireless router together with an ethernet cable, that you get a connection?

Tried that aswell doesn't connect. Probably going to leave it for tomorrow been trying to fix it for like 3 hrs now lol. Will phone them up in the morning and try for an RMA then get a new wifi modem/router.

Strange, however, I don't think it's down to the router or modem. I think it's something to do with your computer, as if you can't connect to either router, using either wireless or ethernet, yet your other devices can connect, it pretty much indicates there's something wrong with your laptop lol.
