Currently my laptop appears to be overheating - specifically on 8 player C&C Generals maps. :(

What is the best cooler around? I'm using a Vostro 1500 if it makes any difference. :)

Don't know which is the best but I'm going to get a Coolermaster Notepal infinite next week since it has 3 fan speeds (should keep the noise down) and can be used on soft surfaces like a bed (it takes air in from the rear), and has a flat bottom so can be used on your lap. Seems to do a good cooling job too-

Most notebook coolers seem to be for use on desks. Thermaltake have some decent ones too.

Btw if you download Ntune (ATITool can do it too) from nvidia it can output a temperature log to a text file, so after a crash you can check what your GPU temp was right before the crash, and coretemp can do the same thing for your CPU. Btw make sure you don't block the air intakes on the underneath of your 1500.

I'll look into the Coolermaster unless anyone recommends something else. :) The Vostro is 99% of the time used on the desk so it remains flat however temperatures seem to reach around 65C and that is when Generals seems to crash. It idles happily at 42C or so for browsing - looking at CoreTemp after the crash.

Sure it's not just the game? Could be something like the SupCom crash where on big maps with lots of players it exceeds the windows address space 2 GB limit and crashes. 65 degrees shouldn't be a problem for a modern GPU, I've just read a reference to the 8600M GT running fine at 80 degrees-

Also the GPU should clock itself back if it gets too hot. Could run a memory check too to rule out a faulty memory problem. Also see if anyone else has the same problem with the game.

Try using a program called i8kfangui to control fan speeds. Those cooler pads seem to make a few degrees difference, at best. Barely worth it.

Just realized you're talking about CPU temps, did you check GPU temps? 65 degrees should be fine for a C2D btw, mine (penryn) is running 63 degrees here running SuperPI on both cores (ie with no heat from GPU). C2Ds don't throttle until about 80 degrees IIRC. No point messing with fan speeds until you have some evidence it's a heat related problem.

Akasa Aluminum Alloy Widescreen Notebook Cooler any good? (ocuk sell it)

also with regard to i8kfan.. i'd be a bit wary of bugs in the software program that make the fans dont come on at all...

got it today :D fits like a charm. Sturdy as well. everything is pretty cool atm havent tested it on full load yet.
