Laptop CPU fluctuation

The CPU on my Lenovo X220 laptop fluctuates from about 1.9ghz up to about 2.2Ghz when in use. Full speed should be 2.5. This wouldn't be an issue but while doing certain audio tasks the CPU spikes return an error in my DAW.

Looking in the resource utility (Win 10 Pro) it shows the CPU utilisation fluctuating around 80% usage.

Should I disable CPU management (or similar) in the BIOS or is there another way to deal with this? Or is it totally normal?? I have the performance on 100% min / max in the power profile settings.

This model did have a throttling problem some time ago, but that was fixed with a BIOS update many versions previous to the BIOS I have.

Sorry for the noobiness, this is my first proper workstation laptop.

Is it plugged in? It will automatically scale down when on battery. I've had the i7 version of x220 and it ran 3.5ghz no problem when 120% performance was selected in the lenovo software thing.

Could be overheating in this weather as well. Download HW Monitor/core temp and check temps, if it's going close to 70c on CPU load it will probably throttle down.

Thanks for your response.

Yes it's plugged in - via a dock. I don't think it's overheating - it was barely being taxed and my room is reasonably cool.

Well if it's not taxed there is no reason for it to go to maximum speed... Download CPU-Z, put stress test on and see if it goes there? Might just as well check temps on full load too.

Yeah I'll give that a go. As I say I don't think the normal way the CPU is controlled is an issue - just that it keeps returning CPU usage errors in Cubase, seemingly from spikes up to 100% utilisation.
