Hey guys, trying to fix a family friends laptop, originally it wouldn't start but after heatgunning the GPU the CPU is now in the 60c+ area when idling. Obviously this is not right and needs sorting.

Any ideas what I can do? I've reseated 3 times, put a copper shim for more contact but it doesn't seem to have helped.

Does the cpu fan start up?

Laptop cpu's have a higher thermal fresh-hold compared with desktop versions (in the majority of cases)

My MacBook often idles at 50-60 degrees after it has been used for a while, there isn't much you can do. It is load temps you need to worry about, mine goes up to around 100 degrees, should be fine for a laptop.

Yeah I hear the fan spinning away it just seems really high given its idling. Turning on underclocking whilst idling helped minimally.

I get that laptops will get hotter over time but this is after it's been on for around 5-10 minutes. To me it seems that it should be much cooler?

If not it explains why the GPU needed to be reflowed

!!!!!!!! im confused HEATGUN what you dont want to heat gun anything you could make it worse you want to reapply thermal paste to CPU and GPU and clean the heatsink

The heatsink is perfectly clean.

I made a copper shim to give more pressure onto the CPU, it has thermal paste on everywhere that it needs to be.

Regarding the 'heatgunning' I did, I used a heatgun to reflow the GPU & the CPU Socket (Not the CPU itself). This is due to the fact the CPU socket is suffering an intermittent fault, causing the laptop not to start. Along with this the GPU also needed reflowing as the display did not work originally.

Don't panic that I've been running around willynilly with a heat gun melting the motherboard :P Fixed several laptop GPU's using it ;P
