Im thinking of upgrading my laptop - it is a P4 3Ghz (not HT.)

What does this equate to with the current range of mobile chips from AMD and Intel?

What chip would you recommend in a £400 laptop?

Try and get a Core 2 Duo laptop, rather than Core Duo. The original core duo is less power efficient, and quite a bit slower than the later C2D's.

The chips you want to look at are T5xxx, and T7xxx codename Merom.

Even if it means stretching your budget a little, its well worth it to get the better processor.

There's a good 30% difference in performance between a T2xxx and a T5xxx at any given clockspeed, and to be honest a 1.66Ghz Core Duo probably wont be much faster than the 3Ghz P4.. Although the Core Duo is of course 2 cores, so faster for multitasking.

The T5xxx C2D on the other hand will likely show a fair improvement over the P4 even at rock bottom clock speeds.
