I am considering buying a laptop for university, which can also play 1080p videos. Currently I am looking at the Acer Aspire 5740G, with an i3 330M and a Mobility 5650. I can use MPC-HC for the vids for GPU decoding, but I'm also curious to know how well the i3 does compared to Turions, Athlons, and Core 2 Duo?

The i series are all really good, even the cheapest one will do you fine.

You don't need MPC-HC or any other codecs for Windows 7, as the new Media Foundation subsytem will automatically read MP4 files and perform all video decoding on the GPU (including H.264). You might want to install the DivX MKV on Windows 7 splitter from http://labs.divx.com/mkvwin7preview, Windows 7 will then handle MKV files as though they were native.
