Laptop CPU swap

Hi all.

Have just had the lid off my laptop (yikes) as needed to see how eay it was to swap out my DVD drive. Whilst in there, i noticed that the CPU (Athlon XP2500, stepping IQZFA 0342TPMW) was not 'hard-fitted' to the mobo and looks as though ity can be swapped out.

What would my options be to upgrade this CPU?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like it's an XP-m (the mobile athlons) TBH you won't get a better chip on that motherboard - they run cool and at low voltages - if you really wanted to increase the speed you should look into overclocking it - could probably get it to 2.2Ghz without hurting temps too much - is it worth it - probably not! You'd see a bigger benefit putting more ram in!

Have already upped the ram to 1Gb, so thats as far as that goes.

Not sure how to clock it as ther are no settings available in the bios.

For info, its an Advent 7038

 Spawn of Satan!

Just kidding - I have a mate who keeps buying Advent - they are fit for purpose but your chance of overclocking are nil.

What are you trying to do that it is not doing well?

What ram does it have in it?

Did you get the new DVD drive?

(I'm driving towards the fact that you would probably be best off flogging it and buying a new one - if you can re-use your RAM/HDD/DVD you can pick up a reasonable machine for about £400 now - bung your stuff in and the flog off yours with the unneeded bits from the new one!)

May sound like a crazy man now.........but.............the lappy actually does what i need it to now. Can quite happily fly around in my FS2004. Granted, not as preety as my home rig, but was never expecting it to be.

The only reason i was going to swap the CPU was because i can (it's like mountains, i suppose).

Havent got the new DVD yet. Unless i convince Mrs S that i need it like now, it will be on my list for July.

Have thought about selling it on and getting me a new one. But that just aint an option at the moment as i am poorer than Africa at the moment.

I feel your pain! (as do most on this forum - we overclock because we can, not because we need to!) It's always tempting to tinker. Always a bit tricky on laptops (and even if it worked you'd be risking disaster if the temps got away from you.)

With your advent though I think you've probably been saved by the mobo - I found with their desktops they were 'special' boards that seemed to come direct from the manufacturers as 'oem' but not show up in their product listing - 'special-builds' I guess, which makes updating bioses tricky and finding help hard.

They tend not to have much to fiddle about with in the bios. (probably for the best :p )

Probably for the best that i cant play around, as you say. Think the cooling would be a great issue. Runs hotter than hot atm, have had to stick an akasa cooler plate under just to keep it alive during FS hops.Still, would have been nice. Maybe i can rig up some sort of crazy portable water cooling system for it. Now that would be an interesting mod.

May just push my home rig. Havent tried clocking that yet for two reasons. 1, im scared of melting it and 2, i dont really know where to start with it.

There's no excuse for not pushing the rig in your signature! Have a look at the sticky - all you need is there - think there's even a thread covering your mobo kicking about somewhere! Worth a search - but it should get some good clocks - that's some good kit! The best performance boost you'll get if from clocking your gfx cards - make sure they're well cooled and get on it :D

Ok then cavemanoc, you have goaded me into it. Will give the sticky a read and see what happens.

Only have the stock coolers on the GFX atm, was after getting the latest Arctic Coolers. Had one on my x850xt before this rig and was rather impressed by it. Whisper quiet and rather chilly too. May keep pushing them till i get the coolers.(must check out reviews on em too)

Will post some results of the clock and if everything goes wrong, i'll send you the bill ;)
