Hi, my laptop as a i3-370m, i have a pal with a laptop that just fitted a i7-XXX, but his old CPU is an i5-480m,

would there be any point stripping my laptop to fit the i5 that would be FREE.
both chips are dual core with HT.
the laptop is a general use laptop and cover all are need with ease, but as a free upgrade would there be any benefits to changing other than the 0.26hgz extra speed the i5 as.

The i5-480m has turbo boost which your i3 doesn't. Max turbo boost is 2.933Ghz. It also has a higher graphics boost of 766mhz compared to your 667mhz. I suppose all this is at the cost of battery life so it's up to you if it's worth it. Here is a side by side comparison of them both.

If you're pretty handy at stripping a laptop down and have the CPU, I would go for it, they are both 35W CPUS so cooling and power you have is fine. Just make sure your laptop has a BIOS that can use the i5-480 or make sure there is a BIOS update for the laptop that will allow it to be used. Worst thing that can happen is it won't recognize the CPU and then you just swap them back and at the same time you stripped the laptop down you ended up at worst giving the laptop a good clean out and new thermal paste.

Here is a quick comparison of the chips.

i have had a few in bits in the past, its not hard but not fun. so i can do it but if i have less that 10% gain am not bothered
