Apparently they're locked at the factory to whatever cpu is installed and you'd have to buy a special code to unlock it, plus upgrading the cpu will overtax the cooling system and you'd need to change the heatsink to a 3rd party one.

Brought to you by the experts at the Purple brigade. Needed some A4 paper and i got to hear this for free.

pitty you cant upgrade the memory either ecause they are hard solded to the motherboard.

interested in buying a newlap top sir? do you want extended warranty with that sir? can i interest you in some expensive software you dont really want sir? how about a printer sir?

TBH given the amount of hassle and expense that would be involved for the lay person to upgrade the CPU on your average laptop, it may as well be right, it's not exactly a common procedure.

Wow, the weekly 'Somebody in a PC shop was wrong' thread.

Wow the weekly Fox trying to belittle someone as usual post. I found it funny so i posted it, does it bother you that much? Guess i'll be flamed by your followers soon.

Exactly this.

In fact, how many people would know how to/be bothered to upgrade any laptop component.

That's why I don't get all the fuss over the new MBPs – the vast majority of people who will by a MBP won't give a **** about how difficult it is to get inside it and mess around with the components.

The only people who care are proper geeks, and the majority of them wouldn't by a Mac out of principle anyway.

wow they even blue the battery down

surely the company goes out of their way and increases the cost of a product by locking everything down? it doesnt make sense to me

So long as they are well built and use high quality components I don't see much issue with it, if you're going to splash that sort of cash then I'm sure you can afford the extended warranty :p

It won't increase manufacturing costs for them but it will bring in massive revenue from the massively overinflated margins on optional upgrades they provide and replacement parts/remedial work that only they can provide.

The guy probably had this in mind http://www.tomshardware.com/news/pentium-g6951-clarkdale-upgrade-card,11320.html but as far as i know its not hit mainstream and never will.

I agree about the cooling situation, just because a better cpu will work in a board does NOT mean the cooling system can handle it.

Also some laptops are "locked" in such that the BIOS does not allow a different cpu to be used, even with an update i have had laptops that should take a faster chip but will not POST with one in due to the BIOS.

Some laptops are easy to upgrade and some are not. Some only require a back panel and unscrewing of the heatsink to change the cpu and some require an almost full stripdown!

I have done a few over the years with mixed success :p

So he was sort of right and also wrong.... typical of the place he worked i guess lol

He was making it clear you were hardly posting something profound. I don't know that it warranted your personal attack.

I hardly attacked him did i? Stating my opinion on a lot of his posts as he did on mine. I knew i wasn't posting anything profound as i've posted those kind of threads before mate.

Anyhow i give up.
