Hello,

I am going to be buying my first laptop in the next week or so and am alittle lost on which CPU to go for.

I was set on this one, AMD Turion 64 mobile technology MK-36 / 2 GHz 512Mb cache

But now i have seen theses 2, Intel Celeron M Processor 430 1.73GHz and Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2060 1.6GHz

Anyone give any info on how they compare ?

Laptop is going to be running vista.

Any links for CPU review sites would be good.

Thanks ben

I dont know anything about the others but my dads got a toshiba A100 running dual core 1.6 and its fast, the reason i upgraded my pc infact, couldnt have the old man being faster than me lol

According to what I got told a 1.6M will run at roughly 3.2GHZ (equivalent to normal P4).

Maybe try go for a Core2Duo laptop? You can get them for almost 400 these days.

This is performace order then ? fastest first

Intel Core 2 Duo
Intel Dual Core
AMD Turion 64 mobile technology MK-36
Intel Celeron M Processor 430

That right ?

If your planning on purchasing a laptop atm, you should be best going for a Core 2 Duo cpu. Models are usually T5*** or T7*** series cpus. These are the laptop version of Conroes, called Meroms. These are the fastest out. It will suprise you how fast a laptop can be with one of these in it ;)

There is also another cpu series that is dual core from Intel. These are called Core Duo cpu's. Models usually are T2*** series. These were the dogs untill the Core 2 Duos arrived. They are still fast and would cope with your needs very good. A mate has a Core Duo acer laptop he bought a while back, its a very decent machine.

The celeron-M series, are budget cpu's for budget laptops. They are what they say on the tin, cheap and slow.

AMD offerings come in the Turion flavour, models usually are MK** or ML**. They are decent cpu's, not used a laptop with one in my self but hear that they are very good for general use. Some cheap machines Ive found whilst searching have had these in, overall they are in the middle ground really. Better than the Celeron-M cpu, but not quite as good as the Core 2 Duo's.

Whats your budget for a laptop?

£800 can get you a good Core 2 Duo laptop with Vista (if thats what you want) which will last you for a while.

I dunno how it measures up but I just got my laptop last week, it's running a 2.33ghz C2D and it's bloody fast.

What laptop you got?

A 2.33GHz C2D (Merom) are the best you can get for a lappy, as you say, they are very fast :D

I am on a small budget, £400-450 so i think the AMD Turion 64 will be the route.

Just gonna be for internet and maybe if it works counter strike source.

I'd seriously recommend you stretch your budget to £499 and get this:

ACER AS5612ZWLMI

Intel Pentium Dual Core T2060 (1.6GHz)
1GB RAM
120GB HD
IntelGMA 950 with up to 224MB
15.4" Display with Brightscreen
DVD-RW
Vista Home Premium
Usual Onboard wireless, sound, USB etc

This is the one i was going for, Acer Aspire 5051AWXMi @ £388.93 :)

Not sure weather to stretch the extra £100

Tell me about it. I have a CoreDuo system sitting here, and it's annoying me that it can't do Folding with the SMP client.

Aye, rather weird how i can smp fold on my 930d but not my m1710 which i bought months after the 930

Ah well, will have to either settle for x32 stuff or get a t7600 when the funds permit :(
