Laptop CPUs

Thanks for the tips; tbh its more than just the Mrs not liking having a desk in the family room... its also me enjoying portable gaming, me using as a work laptop (potentially) so that means going out with it, but I might get something lighter for that as this is over 5kg! And lastly having 3 young children who will chew at the desktop wires, put things in the DVD drive etc is not something I want happening.

Cant grumble if im getting a 4k toy though :D

You can if you can get more performance in a 2K toy...

To be honest, I think you are dead set on this laptop regardless of any excuses about desk, kids and portability. I dont know the answer to your question in your OP, but I would say that get the best price/performance laptop you can. Just remember with a lappy though, regardless of price, you are limited to upgrading, where as a desktop you can keep a healthy system for years just by tweaking and changing as and when you want/need.

So yea, if you want the lappy, go for it.

A word of warning, from experience of other people's laptops the big ones don't tend to last that long. The graphics cards tend to constantly get hot and burn out. I'd look for a smaller midrange laptop with a dedicated graphics card for a lot less money tbh. They do tend to last longer before they die on you!

Yeah its a concern, it comes with 2yr warranty as standard... ill probably get the 3rd year as well. The only good thing is that this company seem to get good reviews and their builds are solid.

I hear where you are coming from on this one. I dont have room (or a desire) for a desk in my front room, and my wife wont want me hogging the TV whilst I'm gaming but we still want to be in the same place so we can chat etc.

I also travel a lot with work so when I am away I still want to be able to game in the dull evenings during the week.

The solution to this is for me to have a decently performing laptop. Having burned out 2 laptops with overheating gfx modules I would not think twice about paying the £70 for the additional years warranty.

I'm also looking at the same supplier and trying to decide between a G170 or GX970. The question has basically come down to, do I want to pay £1000 more for SLI 485s with a desktop CPU or will I be happy enough with a single 485 with a Sandy Bridge mobile CPU.

I have had a laptop of the same size and weight as a GX970 before (Dell XPS 1730) and they do get uncomfortable after extended time on your legs coz they are so damn heavy. Also some kind of tray or stand is a must, the underside of these can get hot enough to burn even through jeans, not to mention the effect on the thermal profile having a non-flat surface underneath them causes. If you are interested in solutions to that I put a thread up here which has some options in it.

Oh yeah one other thing I just spotted, the 970x chassis is not available with the Sandy Bridge processors, and the ones that are (like the G170) dont support SLI 485s.

So which model have you been quoted on with both?

Its from some shady looking company I found online, I wont use them... just thought id ask a price. He is competitive, but tbh im not spending best part of 4k on some shifty laptop that ive not heard of really.
